One of Karnataka's Blue Flag beaches: clean sand, a small park with a walkway, and very few people on weekdays. The sea is calm enough for a paddle in the dry season.

About the beach

Kasarkod lies just south of the Sharavathi river mouth, across the long Honnavar bridge. It is one of only two beaches in Karnataka with Blue Flag certification, an international label for clean sand, safe bathing water and proper facilities. In practice that means a tidy beach park with a walkway, changing rooms, lifeguards and bins that are actually emptied.

The sand runs for kilometres with casuarina trees behind it. On weekdays you may share it with a handful of people. Offshore you can see Basavaraja Durga, a laterite island fort, which is at its best with the sun going down behind it.

Getting there from the homestay

It is about 4 km, ten to twelve minutes by auto or car over the bridge. Autos are easy to find from Tari-Bagel and the family can call one for you. If you have hired a scooter from us, it is a simple ride on the highway with a signed turn-off to the beach.

Pair it with the mangrove boardwalk

The Sharavathi Kandla mangrove boardwalk is almost opposite the beach road. A wooden walkway leads through dense mangrove forest to the water's edge. It is shaded and flat, so it suits children and older visitors, and takes under an hour. There is a small entry fee, around ₹20 per person, and it is generally open from about 9 AM to early evening. Doing the boardwalk first and the beach for sunset makes an easy half day.

Swimming, season and safety

The sea is calmest from October to May. Swim only in the flagged zone when lifeguards are on duty, and stay out of the water in the monsoon, when currents near the river mouth are strong. The beach park closes after sunset.
