Before it was a homestay, it was a film set.

Decades ago a Kannada film crew came to Honnavar with Shankar Nag, the star who was born in this very town. Scenes were shot on the lanes and jetties around Tari-Bagel, and our house stands in the background of them.

The laterite walls, the tiled roof and the palms in those frames are the same ones you will sleep under.

Honnavar homestay

What a Honnavar homestay means at our house

A homestay in Honnavar means staying inside a family's own house, not a hotel built for guests. Ours is run by Paul D'souza and the family who have lived in this red laterite house in Tari-Bagel since it was built in 1960, and who also run the backwater boat rides from the same address.

Check-in is at 12:00 noon and check-out at 11:00 AM, and an early check-in or a late check-out is usually possible if the room is free, you only need to ask. Every room has its own bathroom with hot water, WiFi and a TV, and meals are cooked in the family kitchen rather than bought in.

Booking is direct on WhatsApp with the family, not through a call centre, so the person who answers your message about a room, a meal or a boat ride is the one who meets you at the gate. The boat jetty is about 100 metres away, a two-minute walk, so a stay here also works well if boating is the main reason for the trip.
