What the monsoon is like here

Coastal Karnataka is one of the wettest parts of India. The rain arrives in early June and is heaviest in July, easing through August and September. It rarely rains all day. More often there are hard bursts with bright, washed-clean breaks between them, and everything that was brown in May is green within a fortnight.

What is at its best

These are the things that are better now than at any other time of year.

  • Jog Falls, 60 km inland: the reason many people come. In a good monsoon all four streams merge into one white wall. Go early, before cloud fills the gorge.
  • Apsarakonda Falls, 7 km away: a gentle trickle in winter, a proper waterfall now.
  • The Sharavathi valley road on NH-69: forest, mist and river viewpoints all the way to Jog.
  • Mirjan Fort: the laterite walls grow a coat of bright green grass from August onwards.
  • The house itself: rain on a tiled roof, hot food and a fire under the roof in the evening.

What is limited

Be realistic about these before you book.

  • Backwater boating runs only when the river is safe, and can pause for days in heavy spells. Message us before you plan around it. Since nothing is paid in advance for boating, a cancelled ride costs you nothing, and it is rescheduled free.
  • The sea is closed to swimmers. Kasarkod Eco Beach is for walking, not bathing, and currents near the river mouth are strong.
  • Boat trips on the open sea, such as Netrani Island from Murudeshwar, stop for the season.
  • Sea fishing is banned along the Karnataka coast for about two months from June, so fresh sea fish is scarce then. River and backwater fish, chicken and vegetarian food are unaffected.

What to pack

A raincoat rather than an umbrella, because the wind makes umbrellas useless. Sandals or shoes with grip that you do not mind getting wet, a dry bag or zip pouches for phones, a spare set of clothes for every day and mosquito repellent. Leather shoes and white trousers will not survive.

Getting here in the rains

Trains on the Konkan Railway run to a slower monsoon timetable from June to October, so check timings close to your date. NH-66 along the coast is fine in the rain. If you drive from Bengaluru through the ghats, do that section in daylight, since fog and standing water are common.

Who should come now, and who should wait

Come in the monsoon if you want waterfalls, green hills, empty roads and lower demand for rooms, and you are happy to let the weather decide each morning's plan. Wait for October to March if backwater boating, swimming or beach time is the main reason for your trip.

Common questions

Quick answers

Is Honnavar worth visiting in the monsoon?

Yes, for waterfalls and scenery. Jog Falls and Apsarakonda are at their best from July to October. It is not the season for swimming or guaranteed boat rides.

Does backwater boating run in the monsoon?

Only when conditions are safe, and it can pause for days during heavy rain. Message before planning. Cancelled rides are rescheduled free.

When is the best time to see Jog Falls from Honnavar?

July to October. Leave early, since cloud often covers the gorge by afternoon.

Can I swim at Kasarkod Eco Beach in the monsoon?

No. The sea is closed to swimmers and currents near the river mouth are strong. The beach is still pleasant for a walk between showers.
